The Queen of the Night

Kaarina Kaikkonen

The movement of coming and going from something is a recurrent formal element in Kaarina Kaikkonen’s work- as we can also see in the works titles – thus contributing to create a time bridge between past memories and their tension towards the future. ‘The Queen of the Night’ is dedicated to her mother. The old ball slippers of her mother become part of the artist’s fantasy in a strange, nasty insect and freakish flowers. The stiletto heel is a symbol of feminine sexual aggression, beetles and flies are a symbol of childish fears. What does the artist want to show us? Or does she wants to scare us? Finland, 2005-2013
