[description] => Morphogenesis is a shoe design by Pauline van Dongen. She is a Dutch fashion designer who is currently graduating from her master degree at the Fashion Institute Arnhem (FIA). In collaboration with Freedom of Creation she developed a shoe which is printed 3 Dimensional. With her latest collection Pauline explores the void between a body and a garment and searched for materials that could emphasize this space. By making shapes like capsules that twist and float around the body, she created clothes like organic sculptures. The form language of the graduation collection has also been applied into the shoe design, creating a.sculptural form with organic, intertwining lines. The shoes have been further developed in collaboration with Janne Kyttanen into functional high fashion. As a result of the technology, Pauline was able to created without any borders, everything was possible! The polyamide shoes, made with 3D printing, give a futuristic look and feel to the overall collection.

[description] => These sculptures are a tribute to all women who endure the torture of wearing stilettos. Their sacrifice does not go unnoticed.
This sculpture is handmade from hand picked solid and veneer woods. The height ranges from 17 inches to 24 inches tall.
My wife's own heels are first use for templates to emulate a correct insole contour, then the shaping process begins. From a solid piece of wood the actual sole is carved. After the sole has been carved and sanded smooth carefully selected veneers are applied. Then the straps (band saw blades) were attached. The insole is made of multiple layers of veneer pressed into shape. The colored lacquer is applied to the bottom sole, and multiple coats of clear lacquer are sprayed and buffed.

[description] => Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy
'The book project Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy began with a picture of a leaf I had taken for a client,' says Michel. 'The leaf was turned upside down and I remember saying out loud to no one in particular, ‘that leaf looks like a shoe.’ And, after a move here and a twist there, I had created my first shoe fleur, appropriately named La Première.'
After La Première, Michel was hooked. Each morning for a year he went to the flower market at dawn to bring the freshest, most glorious blooms back to the studio. As the months passed, each shoe fleur emerged with a name and a story. “Every accessory became as unique as the flower or plant I used to make it,” says Tcherevkoff. With names such as Callous Lily, Fort Knox and Escargot each visual is a witty cultural quip.
With Diane von Furstenberg writing the Introduction to Shoe Fleur and Ferruccio Ferragamo writing the Preface, a launch evening at the Museum of Arts and Design, gallery exhibitions in New York and Paris, press coverage in magazines ranging from Elle to US Magazine, Michel has just been discovered as an important contemporary artist.
The images of Shoefleur are for sale in a limited signed edition of 25.

[description] => Footloose- adjustable high heels
Its often said that everything has been thought of. As a designer, I think the opposite is true. As soon as you take a closer look to the world, you notice all things can be improved.
The high-heeled shoe is a classic example of a no pain, no gain product. Women wearing them take so much trouble for granted! I decided to challenge this compromise. Would it be possible to make a shoe having all advantages of high heels, just as well as the comfort of flats?
I designed a shoe with a high heel, which can be changed into a shoe with a low heel. No more extra pairs of shoes in your bag, no more trouble driving a car or walking stairs, no more painful feet, no more knee and ankle damage
For such a product to be a serious alternative for regular heels it has to be mechanically and ergonomical-ly sound, and moreover: it has to have allure!
The character of this shoe is in the heel shape. It has separate tips for both positions. While being used in one position, the other heel tip is kept out of sight in and opening in the sole. The shoe is being transformed with a simple and quick movement: one just pulls the heel downwards to release it, after which it can be folded in or out as preferred. The adjustment of the heel position automatically changes the curvature of the sole to fit the altered shape of the foot. This mechanism has been patented.

[description] => Women's shoes red, part of the 'RED/wild' exhibithion 2008.
Women's shoes have long since mutated from clothing to a more fetish and status symbol. To push the non-functionality and non-ability to the extreme, Svenja Ritter has begun to make structures from silver and metal on the inner soles of her high heeld sculptured shoes. So they are also prohibitive and get a very torture character...

Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes
(January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London)
This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed.

[description] => Liz de Havilland wearing Leyla designed by Terry de Havilland
Theres a sad story behind the naming of these shoes. There was a lovely little gothic girl who used to buy the big clumpy boots from us when we were based in the Stables Market. She suddenly started to buy this particular style of stiletto heeled platform mule and ordered several pairs in different colours and fabrics. When we asked her sister why she was buying so many of them we were told that she had been diagnosed with incurable cancer - we called this style Leyla in her honour.
This particular pair are one-offs made for Liz for a Halloween do, hence the spider-web detailing and the crystal crosses were meant to ward off vampires!!!

[description] => Commissioned by the Faversham Society in 2004 to commemorate Favershams shoemaking history and the Saint Crispin legend. The starting point for the work was a pair of shoes belonging to Pope John Paul II, given to the Vigevano Museum Saints Crispin and Crispinian Consortium, Italy. These red shoes inspired me to research other red shoes with a history. Hans Christian Andersen and, of course, the 1948 film starring Moira Shearer portrays the Red Shoes as the story of a contemporary ballerina. In the 1939 film the Wizard of Oz Glindas magic wand moves the shin red shoes from the Wicked Witch of the East to Dorothys feet, who then skips along the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Karen sacrificed her feet, Moira Shearers character sacrificed love and
the Wicked Witch of the East is sacrificed for the red shoes. The papal connection is the Eucharist commemorating Christs sacrifice and, of course, the Saint Crispin legend is all about sacrifice and shoes. A tenuous link maybe and the red shoe as an icon, maybe not, but shoes symbolise historical changes across time and across cultures and will continue to do so for as long as we have feet and a need to use them.
Red Shoe consists of:
Red shoes: 14 cm long x 5 cm wide x 3 cm high
Dorothys shoes: 8 cm long x 3 cm wide x 6 cm high
Pope Shoes: 22 cm long x 7 cm wide x 4 cm high
All the shoes are made from hemp paper, coated with guache. Dorothys shoes dusted with a fine coat of glitter. All mounted on 3cm deep canvases, secured with thread and buttons.

[description] => Marloes ten Bhömer wearing her own design Red Mâché. Materials; laser cut stainless steel, leather In order to design and make comfortable shoes that have a different silhouette form than the form of a foot, I invented a leather-mâché technique. This technique made it possible to vary the thickness of the shoe at certain parts. In this shoe the leather-mâché technique is used with big sheets of leather, to make the form of the shoe very abstract. All the details like the toe and the heel come from the way of constructing this shoe. The heel for example is just another (reinforced) sheet of leather. I am interested in creating new shoe typologies for people with new fantasies and new definitions of beauty. In order to create these, to move forward in shoe design, I am introducing new shoemaking techniques and materials. Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes (January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London) This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant.

[description] => United Nude launched in 2003 with the Mobius shoe. Since then, United Nude has established itself as an iconic brand at the intersection of fashion and design.
Within a limited range of design concepts, United Nude invents many clear variations. An audience of United Nude lovers has been created, simply by triggering people's imaginations.
United nude products are about clear concept, elegance and innovation. New ways of constructing and new materials enforce the identity of the brand.

toen ik voor het eerst
met haar uit vrijen ging.
Die op mijn kleren pasten
de eerste keer dat ze mij
in haar bed ontving
Die van rood lakleer
met de kleppen en gespen.
Die schoenen die als
appels glimmen, als
besterde! En die mij op hun
snelle zolen naar dat bed
toe droegen, telkens weer!
hemelbestormers waren wij
veroveraars, en de wereld lag
Druk het pedaal nu dieper
in en breng mij ver
bij haar vandaan en help
mij straks rechtop te staan
opdat ik onder ogen zie
dat het is gedaan met
mijn euforie

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
