[description] => Collection S/S 2010
What's New Pussycat?
Spring-Summer 2010 is all about edge, and Minna Parikka is riding high! From happy strappy sandals to kiss-my-feet flats, Minna’s shoes are like lovely little pieces of wearable candy. With a color palette ranging from fruity hues to electric blues, the collection is a medley of sweet and saucy, naughty and nice. And who stacks a heel so high you could use it as a weapon? Well Minna Parikka, of course. Bedecked with her trademark bows, lacing, wings and hearts, Minna’s shoes and buttery-soft, silk-lined gloves are boldly feminine and, as always, made of the finest leather, suede, patent and satin.

[description] => Stroom, meaning flow or electricity in Dutch, is looking for the tension between guidelines and freedom, functional restrictions and the need to challenge what we know. The two come together in a scheme of smart fabric, which wraps around the foot and a solid heel, which functions as solid structure and icon of the footwear. When not in use the fabric wraps around the heel and is compactly stored in a small container.

[description] => Neon-shamanism
Shamanism is a complicated system, where everything has its deep meaning and aim. Shaman's costume symbolizes the animal protector-spirit. In the region of Far-Baikal, most often you can find deer symbol. Sahaas need the deer costume for healing, but also for journeys to the upper- and underworld. Duck is one of the most important helpers of a shaman, as it can dive underwater feeling at home both in the underworld and the upperworld – in the air.
(Michaly Hoppal 'Śamaanid Aasias ja Euroopas')
Neon-deer boots and shaman-duck shoes were inspired of Northern nation´s shamanism traditions. In order to gain more power the shamans used to wear shoes which imitated the animal´s foot whos protection they were seeking. This idea was modernized and coloured into magical neon colour.
Shaman-deer boots platform sole and heel leave behind footsteps of a deer, in this way representing the shamanic deer protector-spirit, who is supposed to help the wearer of the boots. The duck footprint-shaped platform and merest thin heel leave the impression of a duck footprints when walking on soft wet ground.
In 2004 the 'Shaman duck' shoes got the 5th place in the lady's shoes category of the 'Lapiz de Oro' shoe design competition in Elda, Spain and were exhibited in the Elda shoe museum.

[description] => Commissioned by the Faversham Society in 2004 to commemorate Faversham’s shoemaking history and the Saint Crispin legend. The starting point for the work was a pair of shoes belonging to Pope John Paul II, given to the Vigevano Museum – Saints Crispin and Crispinian Consortium, Italy. These red shoes inspired me to research other ‘red shoes’ with a history. Hans Christian Andersen and, of course, the 1948 film starring Moira Shearer portrays the ‘Red Shoes’ as the story of a contemporary ballerina. In the 1939 film the Wizard of Oz Glinda’s magic wand moves the shin red shoes from the Wicked Witch of the East to Dorothy’s feet, who then skips along the Yellow Brick Road to Oz. Karen sacrificed her feet, Moira Shearer’s character sacrificed love and
the Wicked Witch of the East is sacrificed for the red shoes. The papal connection is the Eucharist commemorating Christ’s sacrifice and, of course, the Saint Crispin legend is all about sacrifice and shoes. A tenuous link maybe and the ‘red shoe’ as an icon, maybe not, but shoes symbolise historical changes across time and across cultures and will continue to do so for as long as we have feet and a need to use them.
Red Shoe consists of:
Red shoes: 14 cm long x 5 cm wide x 3 cm high
Dorothy’s shoes: 8 cm long x 3 cm wide x 6 cm high
Pope Shoes: 22 cm long x 7 cm wide x 4 cm high
All the shoes are made from ‘hemp’ paper, coated with guache. Dorothy’s shoes dusted with a fine coat of glitter. All mounted on 3cm deep canvases, secured with thread and buttons.

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
