[description] => “You could say it’s my instinct. Yes I still have one.”
—Neko Case
'Hoof Heels' are inspired by both contemporary fashion trends (AF Vandevorst) and ancient folklore (Pan). They suggest that the viewer can easily embody the animal self.
"Jackson’s precisely molded and glistening glazed forms are both beautiful and grotesque, and ask us to consider how animal instincts can live within human nature. And in doing so, she presents an interesting paradox, such as that noted by Simon Critchley: “There is something charming about an animal becoming human [but] when the human becomes animal, then the effect is disgusting.” For her, “These images provoke a psychological simile between animal and human, instinct and reason, the subconscious and the conscious."
Excerpt from 'We Believe in Something'.
By Christopher Atkins, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MAEP Coordinator.
Material: ceramic, platinum gold luster, flock, glaze, fur (9" x 11" x 4").

[description] => Missbibi oeuvre is inspired by the world of childhood and nostalgia; the arcadia lost that eventually all mankind searches for. Within this innocent beauty, the subversion of scale becomes a recurring figure and the visual object is often fetishised. So Missbibi's work both transforms and diverts the everyday life through its recreational approach and its meticulous attention to small details. In this formal world, the real and the imaginary intertwine. This relationship within the 'invisible' allows us to reclaim objects which our eyes can no longer see... These miniature jewelleries take their inspiration from miniature objects and toys in order to trnsform them into fine pieces of jewellery. Out of silver and silver gold plated these creations drive us into a sentimental journey often making forays into a Lilliputian wonderland.

[description] => After an introduction To Graffiti artist INSA. A mutual respect was born and a desire to fuse the two realms of design and art began.
A shared interest in the iconography of the High Heel Shoe along with a love of sensual forms and materials lay the foundations for some interesting creations.
In September 2008 INSA launched his first range of INSA Heels for retail, as pictured above. INSA created a bespoke signature pattern of high heels and legs that was incorporated into a limited edition series of new Rousseau furniture.
These Items were launched at Designers Block, 2008 september 18th.

The shoe Made of Japan, its size is more then one meter long, marks the authenticity of Onitsuka Tiger as a Japanese label. The shoe is designed by Gary Baseman. Gary Baseman, an important illustrator and toymaker, is influenced by the Japaneese culture and the old Japanese toymaking tradition. Onitsuka Tiger
The astonishing Tiger story The history of Onitsuka Tiger began with the establishment of Onitsuka Co. Ltd. in 1949. Based on the philosophy of bringing up sound youth through sports, the company has maintained the tradition of specializing in the manufacturing of sports shoes using original ideas and applying epoch-making techniques. As the Japanese people recovered from the war and began to appreciate the benefits of sports, Onitsuka Tiger shoes were on their feet. The first basketball shoes in Japan had a tiger face design on the arch of the foot and this became Onitsuka's trademark. In the 1960's, Onitsuka Tiger sports shoes were worn not only by the Japanese, but also by top foreign athletes.

[description] => Leyla's engagement shoe by Master Ali, 1945.
Part of the 'Dowry Trunk Collection-Wedding Shoes, a journey to the past – hopes and memories', 2003-2004
This shoe collection tells stories and reflects memories of a girl's engagement or wedding state. The stamp in the shoe is the mark or the name of the 'usta' (the shoe master).
The inspiration for my collection comes from my aunt's wedding shoes which she used to keep since I was a child. In the old days the masters made personal shoes for these occasions and wrote their signatures of course. Besides a wedding shoe for each woman is symbolic and full with hopes and rich memories...

[description] => Marie-Christine Dorner wearing '3 colours shoes' designed by Freelance.
A little song about my shoes, inspired by Malia, from her song 'purple shoes'.
Arrived in London in my Freelance shoes
The 3 colours ones, they weren’t hard to choose
I was feeling wild I had no blues
I was grooving to the sound of my heartbeat, yeah
I always wear my Free-Lance shoes
So good to wear my 3 colour shoes
Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes
(January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London)
This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed.

[description] => Double Dutch ClogsDouble Dutch is a small collection of clogs and aprons.
The clog collection arose from a longstanding interest in folklore and traditional customs. To make some of the pairs of clogs, old trades like knitting, crochet and embroidery were used. By changing forms and materials, and above all by playing with the context of the well known Dutch clog, five pairs of clogs resulted, each with their own character and function, balancing on the borders of product and sculpture.
Material: wood, felt and cotton yarn.
Description: embroidered clogs with felt socks.
Size: foot sizes
Produced and distributed by Ineke Hans/Arnhem.

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
