[description] => Limited edition Iris (van Herpen) x
United Nude shoes come in 2010, in a worldwide limited edition of 240 pairs, of which 168 pairs in 72 pairs black with gold and ivory with gold. The exclusive design has a number of exclusive shops including Sien in Antwerp and at United Nude's flagship stores in Amsterdam, New York, Shanghai and Vienna, the boots cost around €1,000.
United Nude's creative director Rem D. Koolhaas about the collaboration: "Iris was introduced to us after I admired her fashion collection. At our meeting, I offered making shoes for her. For designers shoes are usually last and often they do not have the right tools to make them: shoemaking is an art.
Challenging Construction: the special shoe is an ankle boot with eye-catching curves and gold details inspired by three-dimensional shapes. Transparency and reflection create a whole, that is visually disconcerting. By the particular silhouette and challenging construction the entire shoe handmade.

[description] => Called Mojito, the design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball.
The foot naturally forms a bridge between the two.
The product is made of carbon fibre, laminated with rubber on the side that touches the floor and leather on the side next to the skin.
Julian Hakes: 'One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general.
I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels.
When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball.
With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.
The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist.
So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?
So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.
With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot.
The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.
The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle.
This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin.
The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.
We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.'

[description] => Without feeling any restrictions Pauline started out shaping around the form of a foot, as if being a sculptress. To her this made the design process very personal, fluent and aesthetic. The forms evolved very naturally and came out of her pencil almost effortlessly; everything was possible! Seeing oneself and surroundings distorted, makes Pauline wonder what is on exhibit here, the object or the space in which it exists — or both. She translated this idea into a concept of a dialogue between the upper part of the shoe and the sole. The shape of the sole is completely surrounded by the upper. In this design reflection and perspective are key elements. Furthermore she wanted to create a clear contrast between the rigid aspect of the wooden sole and the softer, fluid aspect of the upper; sharp edges combined with curves lines. The upper part is made of a high-tech fabric. It has a modern and three dimensional look. In her attempt to create a dialogue she saw that the shoe actually makes people wonder where the foot begins and the sole ends. It makes people wonder how it’s made, how you can walk on it and triggers them to take a closer look and see the piece from different angles.
Winner Sacha Golden Heel award 2010.

[description] => These high heel Converse All Stars have been designed for a performance.
They are a 'graft' between a stripper shoe and an all star converse. The clash between these two elements is extremely interesting: the defined design of the stripper shoe in opaque resin (which I've modified by cutting the heel and the front part) and the all star converse, dirty and worn out.
The combination of these two elements create an unique work: a sculpture-shoe to wear or to keep in a reliquary.

[description] => Who said typography could not be sexy ?
When the elegance of typography meets the extravagance of fashion, it gives Alfashion. Alfashion is a stiletto typeface inspired by the surrealist game 'Exquisite Corpse' (Cadavre Exquis). The game is played as a group of players, each player adding a piece to a design, one at a time. Each participant ignores what the others are adding to the design.
The combination of unexpected or mismatching shapes creates a new design, an hybrid of fashion and typography.

[description] => The Ice cream boots
Rhonda: 'I first started making ice cream shoes in the 70's. I wore a different flavor of shoes everyday. Wearing ice cream shoes to school, kind of upset my instructors at the art center college of design. I just thought they were fun. I made some ice cream shoes for donald pliner of the right bank shoe store in Beverly Hills, California. I was told that Elton John, and Cher bought a pair.
Later I moved to New York City after I graduated from school, wearing a banana split costume. Walking down the street in New York, the owners of Fiorucci fell in love with my shoes, and I designed a window display for their Fiorucci store with the Ice cream shoes as part of the display.'
These Ice cream boots are now being displayed at Royal T in Culver City, California USA. They are available in different flavours!

[description] => LOVE STEPS
An installation-performance by Snežana Golubović
Shown at the DLM Ledermuseum Offenbach, Frankfurter Strasse 86, 63067 Offenbach, Germany from 26 April till 26 Juli 2009
LOVE STEPS was showed for the first time in the frame of the I.P.G. Project 'Erotic Body' this June at the Biennale di Venezia.'The history of shoes is a story about the ancient search for the female beauty ideal.
It is a story about love, passion and obsession.
Aside from their practical use, shoes have many symbolic meanings, most of them
connected with life, love and sexuality.
Shoes could be a desire, personification of missing love.
Shoes could be a 'girl’s best friend'.
Shoes follow us with every step.
They walk, run, suffer, hurt, get wet, get scratched, get muddy, and get old….
Every pair of shoes has its own history. And their history is a part of our biography.'

[description] => Caution! You're almost barefoot! Shoes of subtle sensation from Aloi Sunti.
Inspiration arose by spending time on one of the world's most wonderful stretches of land, where natural beauty is enriched by countless cultural treasures. Along with a couple of friends I was dreaming of an endless summer and we shared a sense of freedom and wellbeing. This experience would have been enhanced, I thought, if I ripped off part of my shoe soles. However, images of elegant and exciting shoes allowing a woman to be almost barefoot soon appeared in my imagination. The product's development challenged last manufacturers as well as traditional metal processors or shoemakers. Each one of them had to think beyond what they knew. Several prototypes were made, a patent application was filed and valuable acquaintances of many ambitious partners were established. The resulting design was so surprising to people that many would not trust their eyes.
'Oh my god, shoes without any arch support!' some say, even before they realize that even the shoes they themselves wore actually do not provide any arch support. Our orthopedic shoemaker and co-developer can explain: 'With ready made shoes and, without customized inlays, there is always a hollow space remaining in the area of the arch of the foot, so that the arch will not be supported at all. Any attempt to provide a serialized inlay fails due to the vast variety of foot shapes. Such an 'average' inlay can even be detrimental to comfort. Therefore, the abandonment of a shoe
sole in the middle area will not create any negative implications.'
The concept for the design is based on the replacement of the steel shank, which is normally incorporated between the outer and inner soles and which gives highest rigidity to the middle sole and the heel. In the Aloi Sunti shoe the flexibility of the sole at the tip of the shoe works as usual but the steel shank has been replaced with a static connection running along the outer side of the foot. The foot is held firmly on it's outer side, but can spread on the other side due to the elasticity of the leather. In order to prevent unattractive welling out of the sole of the foot at the edge of the shoe's heel, it is inclined more than usual.
Thus the comfort of Aloi Sunti is unquestionable and my dream of allowing the air to kiss the soles of a lady's foot is fulfilled, and will give her her a sense of freedom and indulgence in the heat of the summer - or night.

[description] => Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy
'The book project Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy began with a picture of a leaf I had taken for a client,' says Michel. 'The leaf was turned upside down and I remember saying out loud to no one in particular, ‘that leaf looks like a shoe.’ And, after a move here and a twist there, I had created my first shoe fleur, appropriately named La Première.'
After La Première, Michel was hooked. Each morning for a year he went to the flower market at dawn to bring the freshest, most glorious blooms back to the studio. As the months passed, each shoe fleur emerged with a name and a story. “Every accessory became as unique as the flower or plant I used to make it,” says Tcherevkoff. With names such as Callous Lily, Fort Knox and Escargot each visual is a witty cultural quip.
With Diane von Furstenberg writing the Introduction to Shoe Fleur and Ferruccio Ferragamo writing the Preface, a launch evening at the Museum of Arts and Design, gallery exhibitions in New York and Paris, press coverage in magazines ranging from Elle to US Magazine, Michel has just been discovered as an important contemporary artist.
The images of Shoefleur are for sale in a limited signed edition of 25.

[description] => Through continuous research on alternative materials, these shoes were designed as another experiment with woven fibres and sculptural wedges.
These pumps are made from woven carbon and kevlar fibres on a wooden wedge with a shiny black coating. There is a gap at the inside arch of the foot going through upper and wedge. From the outside they look like normal pumps, but from the inside the gap is revealed and light is reflected differently on the shiny wedge. What you see is not what you get...

A women’s shoe needs to have a high heel! It’s a must! This elegant shoe has a great wedge totally covered by leather. The tip of the shoe is in suede. Thanks to the slope heel the shoe looks very elegant.

They were created by us during an exhibition at 'de Appel' in 2006, entitled 'If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want to be Part of Your Revolution'. They're is no internal shank, so they are completely flexible and light. It's a response to how patriarchy is rigid and systematic, ideas of masculinity are also inflexible and heavy.

She started to decorate Dutch wooden clogs. ‘Our cultural inheritage that was disappering in the fashion scene. I took the challenge getting it back in the picture.’Softwoodenshoes is ontstaan after a discussion with Klompen Frans, a wooden toy supplier. He noticed that the traditional wooden clogs were dissapering from the market. People stopt buying the clogs. The softwoodenshoe has a soft instep, what makes wearing them very comfortable and painless.
The Softwoodenshoes are permanently shown in the 'Klompenmuseum 't Oale Ambacht' in Goor, The Netherlands.

[description] => The SWIMS Story
Growing up with four distinct seasons in Norway, I never
let go of the black rubber galoshes that my late grandfather
passed on to me. In 1999 they accompanied me to a milder,
but still rainy Paris. Wearing Chuck Taylor’s Converse
and galoshes, I got around the severe rainfall that autumn.
Not surprisingly, my footwear became the subject of many
jokes around the art school I attended. Later, while living in New York, I blended in with an imageconscius culture that defied slushy streets, freezing winds and pouring rain. Naturally, this resulted in a lot of discomfort and many ruined pairs of shoes.
A few more Manhattan winters went by while I searched
for the right product before I finally took matters in my
own hands and decided to develop SWIMS - The Modern
Galosh! A stylish solution, embodying the essence of practicality: Wear your favorite shoes, slip on SWIMS when
the weather is rough, slip’em off when you arrive at your
destination. Enhanced comfort is assured and your shoes
are guaranteed to stay shiny. The SWIMS galosh is the product of my own experience, my appreciation of functional design, and my odd fascination with big city rain. Enjoy the weather!

[description] => Cuoio was granted the second price at the Lineapelle Young Designers Competition in April 2007.
This project is inspired by bottom leather which is strong, rigid and genuine. The idea was to create a shoe out of one single material in order to fully explore its possibilities and to bring the shoe back to its base. A tribute to the bottom leather...

[description] => DOPIE is a re-evaluation of the sandal, asking the question, what is the minimum requirement for footwear? The result is a unique and stylish shoe that offers the wearer a refreshing variation on the traditional flip-flop or sandal.
DOPIE is the result of a search for a sandal in as simple a form as possible. In its purest from, DOPIE is a single shape, a sole to protect the foot that folds up between the toes to provide control.
The result is a strikingly oringinal shoe that not only looks great, but feels like an entirely new experience to the wearer. Your feet feel naked when you wear them, and as if that wasn’t enough - no more tan lines!

[description] => For this project I drew my inspiration from my three major passions: shoes, architecture and Milan.
I created the ‘City Walker’ concept: a 3D city map is literally wrapped around the foot on a simple sandal. In 2006, the 'City Walker Milan' was born. Inspired by the skylines of the greatest cities, the idea is to promote urban life and to connect people all over the world through the shoes they wear. Each city has its own model and each foot represents a different part of the city map. The idea is to add more cities and different models each season.

[description] => ZHAN Project (2005)
While I was living in Barcelona I heard that CAMPER was looking for young designers to join their design studio in Mallorca.
As I didn't have any shoes designed within my portfolio I decided to develop a project that would follow the company's Philosophy while giving it an added value.
Traveling and storage was the main focus on the project.
The result is a pair of shoes that incorporates an assembly system in its soles, solving the problem of carrying them while travelling; storing them when you don't have enough space in your room and even exhibiting them in stores.
The possibilities of assembly are almost endless.
The project presented here shows only one of the many possible systems.
Shoes can be assembled sideways by straight rails; with positive and negative 'check board' like soles assembled as puzzle, etc.
As the solution is only applied on the soles, any kind of shoe can be developed with this system (men's shoes, women's, kids, sport, etc.) giving us the opportunity to explore and enrich this project even more.

[description] => In 2006 in cooperation with Marc van der Zande of TNO Eindhoven the first totally rapid manufactured shoe prototype (100% laser-sintered) was demonstrated for a complete new shoe concept.
This shoe concept, called ‘Head over Heels’, was the first
implementation of using rapid (digital) manufacturing technology on an entire product in the shoe industry.

[description] => Footloose- adjustable high heels
It’s often said that ‘everything has been thought of’. As a designer, I think the opposite is true. As soon as you take a closer look to the world, you notice all things can be improved.
The high-heeled shoe is a classic example of a no pain, no gain product. Women wearing them take so much trouble for granted! I decided to challenge this compromise. Would it be possible to make a shoe having all advantages of high heels, just as well as the comfort of flats?
I designed a shoe with a high heel, which can be changed into a shoe with a low heel. No more extra pairs of shoes in your bag, no more trouble driving a car or walking stairs, no more painful feet, no more knee and ankle damage…
For such a product to be a serious alternative for regular heels it has to be mechanically and ergonomical-ly sound, and moreover: it has to have allure!
The character of this shoe is in the heel shape. It has separate tips for both positions. While being used in one position, the other heel tip is kept out of sight in and opening in the sole. The shoe is being transformed with a simple and quick movement: one just pulls the heel downwards to release it, after which it can be folded in or out as preferred. The adjustment of the heel position automatically changes the curvature of the sole to fit the altered shape of the foot. This mechanism has been patented.

NDT III was established in 1991 as a company for experienced dancers older than 40 years. The dancers excel in creating a complete theatrical experience, applying the fruits of their vast experience to achieve standards of excellence combining modern and classical dance with mime, drama, comedy, bodily expression and, at times, song. Choreographers employ the unique gifts of each of the dancers to create masterworks of subtlety and refinement. This company of genuine artists of theatre and movement fascinates young and old, connoisseur and beginner, each and everyone.

[description] => Women's shoes red, part of the 'RED/wild' exhibithion 2008.
Women's shoes have long since mutated from clothing to a more fetish and status symbol. To push the non-functionality and non-ability to the extreme, Svenja Ritter has begun to make structures from silver and metal on the inner soles of her high heeld sculptured shoes. So they are also prohibitive and get a very torture character...

[description] => The Moulded moles is part of the project UNDERDOGMA. This project was shown at the Fuori Salone in Milan in april 2004, and is a selection of products in which the designers question 11 dogma‚s in design on 11 products. This results in 9 new products amongst which the Soft Stove of inflammable textiles, Baby Sitter and the moulded moles. The Moulded Moles questions the dogma of the responsibility as designer. Mole-catchers catch up to 500 moles a day and they are thrown away as garbage. As soon as you tan the animals and make shoes out of it does it then goes over the edgy of acceptance?

[description] => Leyla's engagement shoe by Master Ali, 1945.
Part of the 'Dowry Trunk Collection-Wedding Shoes, a journey to the past – hopes and memories', 2003-2004
This shoe collection tells stories and reflects memories of a girl's engagement or wedding state. The stamp in the shoe is the mark or the name of the 'usta' (the shoe master).
The inspiration for my collection comes from my aunt's wedding shoes which she used to keep since I was a child. In the old days the masters made personal shoes for these occasions and wrote their signatures of course. Besides a wedding shoe for each woman is symbolic and full with hopes and rich memories...

Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes
(January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London)
This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed.

[description] => Marloes ten Bhömer wearing her own design Red Mâché. Materials; laser cut stainless steel, leather In order to design and make comfortable shoes that have a different silhouette form than the form of a foot, I invented a leather-mâché technique. This technique made it possible to vary the thickness of the shoe at certain parts. In this shoe the leather-mâché technique is used with big sheets of leather, to make the form of the shoe very abstract. All the details like the toe and the heel come from the way of constructing this shoe. The heel for example is just another (reinforced) sheet of leather. I am interested in creating new shoe typologies for people with new fantasies and new definitions of beauty. In order to create these, to move forward in shoe design, I am introducing new shoemaking techniques and materials. Materials: Cast polyurethane resin.
'The material, polyurethane resin, is used to make a shoe without any traces of hand making, moreover the heel has been taken off, so it will look even less like existing shoes. The shoes have been used in a photo shoot in which
a famous picture of Naomi Campbell has been re-staged. The image has been taken at a catwalk show of Vivienne Westwood and is for me one of the most interesting fashion images, because something that went wrong in an industry that seems to search for perfection (in whatever way that is) has become an iconic image'

Nike athletic footwear

Jungen’s most well known works are his Prototypes for New Understanding (1998-2005): prefabricated Nike Air Jordan trainers (whether they are Air Max2, Max Air Pegasus, or the VXT II cross trainer) are reconfigured into Northwest Coast Indian Masks. This metamorphosis creates a dialogue between the artists First Nations lineage, the global economy, and the object of art. Jungen offers us a contemporary bricolage: a set of what is thought to be Northwest Coast Indian masks that, rather than being intricately carved and decorated, have been produced by cutting and remolding red, white and black Nike Air Jordan trainers. The color schemes and the patterns of the long tongues, heels and tops of the shoes are the perfect medium for Jungen's carefully crafted replicas of raven, sun and wolf masks.
The Prototypes slip between being a fake consumer product and an authentic native artifact, disrupting expected museological frameworks and ethnographic displays. Where are these objects from? To whom do they belong? How should they be categorized? Where should they be displayed?

[description] => Carbon. A very different way of construction has been used for this design. The heel is incorporated in the flat side of the shoe and the rest of the parts are there to keep to shoe onto the foot. Four pattern pieces of carbon fibre construct this shoe. It has hardly anything to do with existing shoe- constructions and -designs and it will make you walk differently.

[description] => Double Dutch ClogsDouble Dutch is a small collection of clogs and aprons.
The clog collection arose from a longstanding interest in folklore and traditional customs. To make some of the pairs of clogs, old trades like knitting, crochet and embroidery were used. By changing forms and materials, and above all by playing with the context of the well known Dutch clog, five pairs of clogs resulted, each with their own character and function, balancing on the borders of product and sculpture.
Material: wood and wool
Description: tough knitted calf nailed to clogs.
Size: foot sizes
Produced and distributed by Ineke Hans/Arnhem.

[description] => Crepla, a type of foam, has been stretched around a sole, so the line of the sole has been emphasized. The silhouette has been made very different from a normal shoe-silhouette. The shoes have been worn during a lecture in Paradiso in Amsterdam during a lecture of Alexander van der Slobbe and during the fashion show of the fashion-department of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem.

[description] => In 2000 I saw a documentary about the Royal College of Art on BBC2 that focused on a course called Design Products. There was an artist on the course and the projects seemed to be very conceptual, ideas based, so I decided to apply.
When I walked into the interview room there were about six people standing around a table looking at my sketchbooks. A man said ’show me your shoes, show me your shoes!’ This confused me at first but later I learned that he was refering to a drawing in my sketchbook (shown above). This man turned out to be Ron Arad, a famous designer and architect. Luckily I was accepted on the course based on this and my other sketched ideas.

When men were men and a cuppa coffee cost a penny. And John Fluevog was a strapping young man with a glorious future. Here, you'll find artifacts of that future, now distant past. Or, passed. Whatever. These wonders have long vanished into the ether (meaning they're, like, totally unavailable, so don't even think it), but they live on, in our hearts. In fact, we know that many of your closets and attics hold rare treasures of Fluevog History. Whether they're shoes, accessories, old marketing materials or related items we didn't even make, it's all welcome. [description] => Part of the 'Shoes Or No Shoes' collection, a project developed over the course of the past 20 years by a Belgian couple of shoemakers, Pierre Bogaerts and Veerle Swenters. They decided to make a connection between their profession and art by means of collecting the shoes of famous artists. Many of these artists transformed their shoes into an artwork or donated a drawing or a painting involving shoes or feet. The SONS-museum includes a contribution of Arman, Baselitz, Fabre, Kabakov, Kippenberger, Oldenburg, Richter, Wesselman … among many others. The permanent exhibition is located in Kruishoutem - Belgium.

[description] => United Nude launched in 2003 with the Mobius shoe. Since then, United Nude has established itself as an iconic brand at the intersection of fashion and design. Within a limited range of design concepts, United Nude invents many clear variations. An audience of United Nude lovers has been created, simply by triggering people's imaginations. United nude products are about clear concept, elegance and innovation. New ways of constructing and new materials enforce the identity of the brand.

[description] => Nike athletic footwear
Courtesy Catriona Jeffries Gallery, Vancouver

[description] => In the nineties there was a dutch comic televison series called 'Kreatief met kurk' (creative with cork) by Arjan Ederveen and Tosca Niterink, broadcasted by VPRO. Every week they showed a new design completely made of cork, such as dollhouse interiors, picture frames etc. One of the designs was this footfriendly and feather light flip-flop. You can find this image in the 'Kreatief met kurk, kursusboek 1993'.

Meret Oppenheim (1913-1985) was an important surrealist Swiss painter and sculptor. In 1936 Oppenheim exhibited Ma Gouvernante made of a pair of shoes bound together on a platter in a position simulating that of a nude woman on her back with her legs spread and dressed with paper frills. The shoes caused as a lot of excitement. This pair of shoes was distroyed, but a new pair was made in 1967 when Moderna Museet made an Oppenheim show.

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
