Wood has been used for millennia for many purposes. One of its primary uses is as fuel. It is also used as for making artworks, furniture, tools, construction material and is of course also used for making clogs

Without feeling any restrictions Pauline started out shaping around the form of a foot, as if being a sculptress. To her this made the design process very personal, fluent and aesthetic. The forms evolved very naturally and came out of her pencil almost effortlessly; everything was possible! Seeing oneself and surroundings distorted, makes Pauline wonder what is on exhibit here, the object or the space in which it exists — or both. She translated this idea into a concept of a dialogue between the upper part of the shoe and the sole. The shape of the sole is completely surrounded by the upper. In this design reflection and perspective are key elements. Furthermore she wanted to create a clear contrast between the rigid aspect of the wooden sole and the softer, fluid aspect of the upper; sharp edges combined with curves lines. The upper part is made of a high-tech fabric. It has a modern and three dimensional look. In her attempt to create a dialogue she saw that the shoe actually makes people wonder where the foot begins and the sole ends. It makes people wonder how it’s made, how you can walk on it and triggers them to take a closer look and see the piece from different angles.

This project is an exhibition of form and texture; investigating nature. Within this project it was my ambition to find a balance between nature and modern design; where the two concepts blend fluidly. I was inspired by the shapes of cliffs and terraced farming on mountains; by the rich world of textures in coral reefs; by the change of colour within the decay and erosion of the earth. The basic concept of life, the cycle of a seed growing into a plant whose fibers can be used to make natural fabrics, which in turn can be used to make sustainable footwear is beautiful and idealistic.

The final goal is the reduction of impact upon that which I find inspiration - nature. What is born from nature returns to it in the end. Hand crafted products grow old gracefully and take on a personality acquired by memories of its use. I wanted those products to be of a high quality, design and aesthetic value and to translate easily into the industry and a wide market.
In an effort to make a statement of how impressive and experimental sustainable footwear can be, I created the collection to express awareness and closeness between nature and time; a concept which strengthened my designs.
The realization that we as designers have responsibilities not only to the aesthetic world, but also to the ethical world is an essential foundation. With 2009 being the international year of natural fabrics, I found a perfect opportunity to attend debates and exhibitions concerning sustainable, renewable and recycled fabrics. I was introduced to fabrics of crab-shell, milk and other intriguing concepts. This experience made me to realize the unique beneficial characteristics of plant and animal fibers.
The idea of sustainability just made sense to me. In a world where 330 million pairs of shoes are thrown into land fills per year, I felt the need to make a product that would endure and to try to find a balance between fast and slow fashion. I embarked on a research which allowed me to explore many topics.

I was inspired by a piece by Heinrik Hakinssan in which he suspended trees by wire without root systems, to me displaying the power of nature. This impression began my adventure through 'Green Artists' and the intriguing concepts behind their work. Exploring further, I discovered Eco-Architects creating buildings which grew like living organisms. My curiosity led me to uncovered many exciting and innovative designers and researchers. From Bio Couture, to 3D printing, the idea that science and technology used to create a new world of intelligent fabrics was mesmerizing. Understanding the importance of collaborations with artisans, designers, scientists and technology opened up endless possibilities and opportunity.

Having started an apprenticeship with a shoemaker from June of 2008, this experience provided me with the insight, knowledge and understanding necessary to realize this project. It was a stimulating challenge sourcing and constructing a shoe with fabrics.
Living in San Frediano, an area of Florence rich with artisans, I seized the opportunity and asked a wood restorer to collaborate
with me on this experiment. I made the heels first in plasticine, then we sought a solution to carve to them light and strong woods. Local organic farmers and leather and textile manufacturers in Tuscany provided an interesting range of fabrics which complemented my designs.

My shoes are made with vegetable tanned leather, walnut wood heels, fabrics including caucciui covered organic cotton, linen, raffia, hemp, bamboo and cork to support the forms.

Fun ideas spring to mind with my collection, changing the seeds instead of shoes with the passing seasons. It is my hope that in their second life they will decay and grow as an art piece.

This sculpture is handmade from hand picked solid and veneer woods. The height ranges from 17 inches to 24 inches tall.

My wife's own heels are first use for templates to emulate a correct insole contour, then the shaping process begins. From a solid piece of wood the actual sole is carved. After the sole has been carved and sanded smooth carefully selected veneers are applied. Then the straps (band saw blades) were attached. The insole is made of multiple layers of veneer pressed into shape. The colored lacquer is applied to the bottom sole, and multiple coats of clear lacquer are sprayed and buffed.

Through continuous research on alternative materials, these shoes were designed as another experiment with woven fibres and sculptural wedges.

These pumps are made from woven carbon and kevlar fibres on a wooden wedge with a shiny black coating. There is a gap at the inside arch of the foot going through upper and wedge. From the outside they look like normal pumps, but from the inside the gap is revealed and light is reflected differently on the shiny wedge. What you see is not what you get...

The high heeled Staphorster clog is handpainted in an old traditional dotted craftwork pattern by an old lady from Staphorst. The woorden clog was manufactured by Jos Hogenkamp.

Staphorst is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. Staphorst, famous for people wearing traditional dress. Furthermore, it is one of the most religious towns of the Netherlands, with a lot of people attending Calvinist church. Staphorst is said to grind to a halt on Sundays.

A large proportion of the population holds fundamentalist Christian beliefs, and oppose technologies such as television and blood transfusions. This is in contrast to the permissive, libertarian tendency in Dutch law. Nevertheless, Staphorst has a big industrial area with small, but modern enterprises; on days other than Sundays, tourists are welcome (Wikipedia).

Mina Harker
In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Mina Harker is a quiet English teacher that should marry an employee. Her fiancé goes to Transylvania to meet up with the Earl Dracula for a real estate’s sale. The Earl sees a photograph of the young lady which resembles exactly his beloved dead bride, that killed herself centuries before believing her husband dead in battle. So the Earl decides to move to London to court Mina, she falls into his arms, in a reminiscence’s dance of a love which passed unhurt through the centuries, perhaps with fascinations and disillusions to the final blood catharsis in which she chooses to set her lover free from the curse of “non-dead”, transfixing his hearth and cutting off the head. I’ve therefore realized her sandal with some garlic cloves, famously unpopular for vampires and speakers. The heels are two crucifixes, symbol of the Christ, of Redemption, of Death and his consequent Resurrection aside of the struggle against vampires. In fact, it will be his last “bride” to put the word end on the dark legend of Dracula.

Part of the Fluseum collection.

When men were men and a cuppa coffee cost a penny. And John Fluevog was a strapping young man with a glorious future. Here, you'll find artifacts of that future, now distant past. Or, passed. Whatever. These wonders have long vanished into the ether (meaning they're, like, totally unavailable, so don't even think it), but they live on, in our hearts. In fact, we know that many of your closets and attics hold rare treasures of Fluevog History. Whether they're shoes, accessories, old marketing materials or related items we didn't even make, it's all welcome. Send your photos and stories to info@fluevog.com and, if they fit the bill, you'll see 'em in the Flueseum!

Virtual Shoe Museum : Wood
Home of the Virtual Show Museum

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.

And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...

If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.

The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.

On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.

material

wood

Wood is a solid material derived from woody plants, notably trees but also shrubs. Wood from the latter is only produced in small sizes, reducing the diversity of uses. Wood has been used for millennia for many purposes. One of its primary uses is as fuel. It is also used as for making artworks, furniture, tools, construction material and is of course also used for making clogs
