Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes
(January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London)
This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed.

A little song about my shoes, inspired by Malia, from her song 'purple shoes'.
Arrived in London in my Freelance shoes
The 3 colours ones, they weren’t hard to choose
I was feeling wild I had no blues
I was grooving to the sound of my heartbeat, yeah
I always wear my Free-Lance shoes
So good to wear my 3 colour shoes

[description] => Liz de Havilland wearing Leyla designed by Terry de Havilland
Theres a sad story behind the naming of these shoes. There was a lovely little gothic girl who used to buy the big clumpy boots from us when we were based in the Stables Market. She suddenly started to buy this particular style of stiletto heeled platform mule and ordered several pairs in different colours and fabrics. When we asked her sister why she was buying so many of them we were told that she had been diagnosed with incurable cancer - we called this style Leyla in her honour.
This particular pair are one-offs made for Liz for a Halloween do, hence the spider-web detailing and the crystal crosses were meant to ward off vampires!!!

These are George’s first pair of shoes that she made for herself. They are really worn and loved out, they've been through rain storms, clipped along snowy streets, and Ioved for the way they turn up at the end like a pair of jester shoes.
George has totally ignored the advice she gives her customers of shoe care and has just had loads of fun in them... whatever the weather!

In case you’re wondering... worn with head to toe black and a dash of red lipstick, very 'femme fatale'. These were one of Ashlee’s first pairs of Manolo's (and she has lots) 'On their first outing they immediately commanded attention. Within an hour of wearing them I had a man drooling over the shoes. As he asked me to join him for coffee, all the time staring at the shoes', he said, 'So, do you always wear shoes like that?'

'The material, polyurethane resin, is used to make a shoe without any traces of hand making, moreover the heel has been taken off, so it will look even less like existing shoes. The shoes have been used in a photo shoot in which
a famous picture of Naomi Campbell has been re-staged. The image has been taken at a catwalk show of Vivienne Westwood and is for me one of the most interesting fashion images, because something that went wrong in an industry that seems to search for perfection (in whatever way that is) has become an iconic image'

[description] => Marloes ten Bhömer wearing her own design Red Mâché. Materials; laser cut stainless steel, leather In order to design and make comfortable shoes that have a different silhouette form than the form of a foot, I invented a leather-mâché technique. This technique made it possible to vary the thickness of the shoe at certain parts. In this shoe the leather-mâché technique is used with big sheets of leather, to make the form of the shoe very abstract. All the details like the toe and the heel come from the way of constructing this shoe. The heel for example is just another (reinforced) sheet of leather. I am interested in creating new shoe typologies for people with new fantasies and new definitions of beauty. In order to create these, to move forward in shoe design, I am introducing new shoemaking techniques and materials.

Bought by daughter Kate for her mum... or should I say practically snatched from the hands of the editor of Vogue at a sample sale! Alison has only worn these shoes out once - to make this portrait, to her they are a work of art, she is saving a public outing for a special event in the future, you might see her in them here...

[description] => Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)
Paris, Oil on canvas, 32.5 X 40.5 cm

[description] => Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) Paris.
Oil on canvas, 1886, size 37,5 x 45,5 cm.
This painting of a pair of down-at-heel shoes prompts speculation on a variety of psychological questions. They have been seen as symbolizing Van Gogh’s difficult passage through life. A fellow student in Paris reported that Vincent bought these workman’s boots at a flea market, intending to use them in a still life. Finding them still a little too smart, however, he wore them on a long and rainy walk. Only then were they fit to be painted. Van Gogh made a number of still lives with old shoes. To him, as to several of his contemporaries, they may have been symbolic of the hard yet picturesque life of the laborer.
German philosopher Heidegger about this painting:
Artworks, Heidegger contends, are things, a definition that raises the question of the meaning of a "thing." As this concept is so broad, he narrows down the definition to "mere things," meaning inanimate objects. He then chooses to examine a pair of shoes painted by Van Gogh, looking to the work to establish a distinction between artwork and other "things." This was actually typical of Heidegger as he often chose to study shoes and shoe maker shops as an example for the analysis of a culture. Heidegger explains the viewer's responsibility to consider the variety of questions about the shoes, asking not only about form and matter—what are the shoes made of?—but bestowing the piece with life by asking of purpose—what are the shoes for? The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
