Laura J London S/S 10 Collection

The Laura J London S/S 2010 collection is inspired by architectural forms, with each shoe named after a technical term or style within the architectural discipline. Every collection we aim to focus on striking use of shape and colour, and this season is no different, drawing heavily on block colours of canary yellow and  sky blue for maximum impact. Suede has been replaced by the more modern material nubuck giving the collection a fresh edge.

Rotational moulding is a process in which a negative mould is filled with a small amount liquid material and as the mould starts to rotate, this material solidifies against the inner walls of the mould, forming a shell, a hollow form.

Rotationalmouldedshoe was specifically designed for the 'After Hours' installation in the Krannert Art Museum in Illinois, USA, 2009.

The heel for example has been taken away. Instead of the heel there is a bridge like construction, which leaves the back hollow. I wanted to give the impression of a monolithic form, out of which a foot has been carved. This is also the way this shoe has been build. Starting with a hardly shaped block in the computer, carving out all the parts where the foot wants to be. The shoe will be rapid prototyped in a rubber like material, and will be milled out of a block of leather by a 5axe cnc milling machine. The way I build this shoe is important, for it is possible to build a flexible shoe without any stitches or traces of handwork in this shoe and no reference to conventional shoemaking. The MARLOESTENBHÖMER™ leather-mâché technique is a leather laminating technique, which abolishes the use of a shoe upper pattern and allows for a varied wall thickness of the shoe. Redmâchéshoe uses rather big sheets of leather, defining the heel and abstracting the toe. The heel is a reinforced sheet of leather, attached to the side of the shoe curving down underneath the heel of the foot.

Virtual Shoe Museum : Marloes ten Bhömer
Home of the Virtual Show Museum

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.

And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...

If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.

The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.

On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.

Marloes ten Bhömer

Marloes Ten Bhömer a London based Dutch product designer graduated from the London College of Fashion & The Royal College of Art. She is considered one of the most promising designers of her generation and has exhibited worldwide. Most recently she was nominated for the Grand Brit Insurance Design Award held at the Design Museum.

Ten Bhömer’s shoes are both provocative and otherworldly; Her works question our perception of functionality, fusing art and technology to create an origami like production, working with materials ranging from wood to polyurethane resin, tarpaulin, steel and fiberglass. Marloes ten Bhömer is a Hussein Chalayan for the extremities.’ Wallpaper Magazine
