Clog: "A type of shoe or sandal made predominantly out of wood."

Traditional clogs were made out of willow or poplar wood and are associated with the Netherlands and Sweden as part of the touristic 'Holland'/Swedish image, where they are seen as a form of national dress. Because of this, Dutch people are sometimes called cloggies, that is, clog-wearers. In Dutch, clogs are known as klompen. Today, as you can see in our collection, clogs have become a source of inspiration of young designers.

The high heeled Staphorster clog is handpainted in an old traditional dotted craftwork pattern by an old lady from Staphorst. The woorden clog was manufactured by Jos Hogenkamp.

Staphorst is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. Staphorst, famous for people wearing traditional dress. Furthermore, it is one of the most religious towns of the Netherlands, with a lot of people attending Calvinist church. Staphorst is said to grind to a halt on Sundays.

A large proportion of the population holds fundamentalist Christian beliefs, and oppose technologies such as television and blood transfusions. This is in contrast to the permissive, libertarian tendency in Dutch law. Nevertheless, Staphorst has a big industrial area with small, but modern enterprises; on days other than Sundays, tourists are welcome (Wikipedia).

The clog collection arose from a longstanding interest in folklore and traditional customs. To make some of the pairs of clogs, old trades like knitting, crochet and embroidery were used. By changing forms and materials, and above all by playing with the context of the well known Dutch clog, five pairs of clogs resulted, each with their own character and function, balancing on the borders of product and sculpture. Virtual Shoe Museum : Clog
Home of the Virtual Show Museum

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.

And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...

If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.

The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.

On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.

shoe type

clog

Clog: "A type of shoe or sandal made predominantly out of wood."

Traditional clogs were made out of willow or poplar wood and are associated with the Netherlands and Sweden as part of the touristic 'Holland'/Swedish image, where they are seen as a form of national dress. Because of this, Dutch people are sometimes called cloggies, that is, clog-wearers. In Dutch, clogs are known as klompen. Today, as you can see in our collection, clogs have become a source of inspiration of young designers.
