[description] => Called Mojito, the design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball.
The foot naturally forms a bridge between the two.
The product is made of carbon fibre, laminated with rubber on the side that touches the floor and leather on the side next to the skin.
Julian Hakes: 'One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general.
I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels.
When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball.
With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.
The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist.
So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?
So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.
With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot.
The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.
The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle.
This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin.
The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.
We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.'

[description] => “You could say it’s my instinct. Yes I still have one.”
—Neko Case
'Hoof Heels' are inspired by both contemporary fashion trends (AF Vandevorst) and ancient folklore (Pan). They suggest that the viewer can easily embody the animal self.
"Jackson’s precisely molded and glistening glazed forms are both beautiful and grotesque, and ask us to consider how animal instincts can live within human nature. And in doing so, she presents an interesting paradox, such as that noted by Simon Critchley: “There is something charming about an animal becoming human [but] when the human becomes animal, then the effect is disgusting.” For her, “These images provoke a psychological simile between animal and human, instinct and reason, the subconscious and the conscious."
Excerpt from 'We Believe in Something'.
By Christopher Atkins, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MAEP Coordinator.
Material: ceramic, platinum gold luster, flock, glaze, fur (9" x 11" x 4").

[description] => The SICIS’s 'shoe shaped' bathtub, Audrey, is covered with precious glass mosaic in an artistic way.
Audrey show a new level of originality. Their shape - of an elegant pump shoe with a skyscraper heel (165 cm!!) - is perfect to receive a body in a comfortable embrace, as the water trickling from above massages the shoulders of their occupant. Like an oversized version of a... classic Barbie shoe (50’s anniversary)!
Design and colour can be custom on request, the water comes from the heel like a waterfall but there is also a lateral tap. Length of the bathtub is 270 cm, maximum wide 101 cm.
Audrey was first introduced at the 'Salone del Mobile' (International Furniture Fair), in April 2009 in Milan, Italy. There are three models available to see in our showroom in Milan, but soon they will be also abroad.

[description] => Tea Petrovic has designed a collection of shoes based on the work of late Russian sculptor Naum Gabo and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
This shoe collection is centered around the idea that each shoe is an sculptural-architectural structured form. The collection contains ten plastic prototypes entirely handmade. Each model is an experiment with the high heel, since they determine the whole form of a shoe. The heels are columns, constructive elements on which the whole creative process is based with an aim to create a new concept of high heels.
Bernard Figueroa once said: 'There is so much space between a woman's heel and the floor that one can use.', and that is exactly what I tried to accomplish using this space as much as possible.
These shoes are primarily an art object and their function is secondary. The focus is on the form, their only decorative element. Design is based on the exploration of new high heel shapes, resulting in numerous variations of their basic form. To underline their sculptural form, the shoes are kept white, which on the other hand emphasis the artistic language, present in the entire collection.

[description] => Women's shoes have long since mutated from clothing to a more fetish and status symbol. To push the non-functionality and non-ability to the extreme, Svenja Ritter has begun to make structures from silver and metal on the inner soles of her high heeld sculptured shoes. So they are also prohibitive and get a very torture character...
Material: metal, beads, glass and wax.

[description] => Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy
'The book project Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy began with a picture of a leaf I had taken for a client,' says Michel. 'The leaf was turned upside down and I remember saying out loud to no one in particular, ‘that leaf looks like a shoe.’ And, after a move here and a twist there, I had created my first shoe fleur, appropriately named La Première.'
After La Première, Michel was hooked. Each morning for a year he went to the flower market at dawn to bring the freshest, most glorious blooms back to the studio. As the months passed, each shoe fleur emerged with a name and a story. “Every accessory became as unique as the flower or plant I used to make it,” says Tcherevkoff. With names such as Callous Lily, Fort Knox and Escargot each visual is a witty cultural quip.
With Diane von Furstenberg writing the Introduction to Shoe Fleur and Ferruccio Ferragamo writing the Preface, a launch evening at the Museum of Arts and Design, gallery exhibitions in New York and Paris, press coverage in magazines ranging from Elle to US Magazine, Michel has just been discovered as an important contemporary artist.
The images of Shoefleur are for sale in a limited signed edition of 25.

[description] => Through continuous research on alternative materials, these shoes were designed as another experiment with woven fibres and sculptural wedges.
These pumps are made from woven carbon and kevlar fibres on a wooden wedge with a shiny black coating. There is a gap at the inside arch of the foot going through upper and wedge. From the outside they look like normal pumps, but from the inside the gap is revealed and light is reflected differently on the shiny wedge. What you see is not what you get...

[description] => This Dildo shoe is a womens shoe, based on a ballet last, hand made. The inspiration for the shoe, is the sex industry, and sex toys. As you can see, from the heel, it is based on of course a dildo, or anal toy. It was inspired also from the late 2007 trend of 'fetish'.
The straps upon the forefoot, are made from black patent leather, and egg shell finish cream. to create a stunning contrast. The spikes are in two lengths, and can be interchanged, with just screwing them off and changing them.
The selfmade heel is in high quality resin. So if need be... the heel can be used...

[description] => Eelko Moorer's footwear can latch on to hand strap rails inside Tube trains, reports Sky News. Moorer, from east London, got his girlfriend Alice Wolff to try the boots out.
'We had a somewhat mixed reaction from other tube travellers,' he said. 'Some people were surprised, others liked it and others were appalled.'
The 32-year-old came up with the design while pondering how to liven up 'boring and similar journeys'.
He said: 'I like the idea of doing something that gives a person a sense of relief and can cheer up lives.'

[description] => The first phase of computer modeling is to create a wire-frame - after that you fill in the facets to create the item in 3D. In the eighties 3D computer games were entirely in wire-frame. These shoes are part of a series of everyday objects depicted in real-life wire-frame.
Stepping into these shoes is like stepping into a virtual 3D world. After all, this is the virtual shoe museum.
These Wire Shoes (size 7 shoes, galvanized wire) are available from the Red Door Gallery, Edinburgh.

[description] => The first phase of computer modeling is to create a wire-frame - after that you fill in the facets to create the item in 3D. In the eighties 3D computer games were entirely in wire-frame. These shoes are part of a series of everyday objects depicted in real-life wire-frame.
Stepping into these shoes is like stepping into a virtual 3D. After all, this is the virtual shoe museum.

[description] => The I Ashi Bionicus range is insupired by Bjorks Music
video 'All is full of love' by Chris Cunningham and
the 06/07 trend of Apple I-pods, toyota I-series, I
robot etc.
The concept places emphasis on purity in simplicity
and form through clinical colour and minimal
construction. The exo-skeletal structure is comprised
of 10 pieces of vac formed gloss plastic thus reducing
on conventional toe puffs, counter stiffeners and
requires no lasting. The interior is comprised of
neoprene only exposing a single 1 cm stitch and thus
eliminates conventional fastening, lining and padding,
while the sole is a simple black resin.
As the foot is placed into the shoe, the elasticity of
the neoprene expands the shoe, hence ergonomic seams
in the plastic, and when the foot is fully inside the
shoe, the neoprene tightens retracts around the foot
to fit like a sock. The seams are carefully placed to
allow for movement in key ergonomic areas of the foot
maximizing comfort, flexibility and movement. The
design won the 2006 Linea Pelle Footwear Award in
Milan.

Women's shoes have long since mutated from clothing to a more fetish and status symbol. To push the non-functionality and non-ability to the extreme, Svenja Ritter has begun to make structures from silver and metal on the inner soles of her high heeld sculptured shoes. So they are also prohibitive and get a very torture character...

[description] => Marloes ten Bhömer wearing her own design 'No heels'.
Materials: Cast polyurethane resin.
'The material, polyurethane resin, is used to make a shoe without any traces of hand making, moreover the heel has been taken off, so it will look even less like existing shoes. The shoes have been used in a photo shoot in which
a famous picture of Naomi Campbell has been re-staged. The image has been taken at a catwalk show of Vivienne Westwood and is for me one of the most interesting fashion images, because something that went wrong in an industry that seems to search for perfection (in whatever way that is) has become an iconic image'
Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes
(January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London)
This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed.

[description] => Fetish carrier bag is a product from ComuniStar designers, a young brand from Slovakia which creates unique contemporary designer furniture and interior accessories. Our mission is to create conditions for development and realisation of european design authorship, which will contribute to the building of cultural heritage of Central Europe. We use ideal regional technological and productional conditions for production of all designs. We are looking for own design language and identity, not seeking to follow the global mainstream. Questions like ecology, tradition, and social groups will not be suppressed by the dictation of what is currently trendy. ComuniStar has the ambition to become the commissary of a new original design identity from the former eastern block countries/from Central Europe.

[description] => Carbon. A very different way of construction has been used for this design. The heel is incorporated in the flat side of the shoe and the rest of the parts are there to keep to shoe onto the foot. Four pattern pieces of carbon fibre construct this shoe. It has hardly anything to do with existing shoe- constructions and -designs and it will make you walk differently.

The ultra light platform shoes are part of the various and unconventional oeuvre of the architects Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn. Their love for voor utensils and use of materials is a central theme in their work since 1966.

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.
The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.
And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...
If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.
The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.
The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.
On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
