Laura J London S/S 10 Collection

The Laura J London S/S 2010 collection is inspired by architectural forms, with each shoe named after a technical term or style within the architectural discipline. Every collection we aim to focus on striking use of shape and colour, and this season is no different, drawing heavily on block colours of canary yellow and  sky blue for maximum impact. Suede has been replaced by the more modern material nubuck giving the collection a fresh edge.

Called Mojito, the design consists of a single piece that wraps around the wearer’s foot, forming support for the heel and ball.

The foot naturally forms a bridge between the two.

The product is made of carbon fibre, laminated with rubber on the side that touches the floor and leather on the side next to the skin.

Julian Hakes: 'One late summer night in the studio I was thinking about the design of shoes in general.

I wondered why there was the need for a foot plate in shoes such as high heels.

When I look at a foot print on sand it is very clear to see that the main force goes to the heel and ball.

With a high heel providing the heel is supported, even by standing on a wooden block the foot naturally ’spans’ the gap naturally, with bones and tendons.

The foot has its own inbuilt strength and support so why duplicate this. You would not have a jumper with rigid arms between elbow and wrist.

So this raised the question, if the design of a shoe was an evolution of the early sandal and how can new materials and design techniques provide new solution?

So I set to exploring this question in a similar way to how I would design a bridge, examining the forces and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.

With this approach I then set about wrapping my foot in tracing paper, then binding it up in masking tape and then drawings various geometries onto and over the form of my foot.

The next stage was rather dangerous as I had to cut the shape off my foot with a scalpel and not damage the pattern or my foot.

The design this produced is a single wrapped geometry which starts under the ball of the foot and then over the bridge, then sweeping down below the heel before then twisting back on itself to provide the support for the heel and ankle.

This form felt light and airy on the foot. So we called it the ‘Mojito’ as it was rather like a twist of lime skin.

The material choice is simple: The shoe is a laminate with Carbon fibre for the core which gives the shoe its spring and strength, leather on the foot side and rubber on the walking wearing side. 3 materials, each doing a specific job.

We are now in talks with specalist shoe fabricators in for the inital prototypes, a firm in Italy would be able to make the inner carbon fibre core and then I would love to get some fabulous furniture makers in High Wycombe to ’skin’ the shoe in leather as their stitching detailing is second to none.'

She is a Dutch fashion designer who is currently graduating from her master degree at the Fashion Institute Arnhem (FIA). In collaboration with Freedom of Creation she developed a shoe which is printed 3 Dimensional. With her latest collection Pauline explores the void between a body and a garment and searched for materials that could emphasize this space. By making shapes like capsules that twist and float around the body, she created clothes like organic sculptures. The form language of the graduation collection has also been applied into the shoe design, creating a.sculptural form with organic, intertwining lines. The shoes have been further developed in collaboration with Janne Kyttanen into functional high fashion. As a result of the technology, Pauline was able to created without any borders, everything was possible! The polyamide shoes, made with 3D printing, give a futuristic look and feel to the overall collection. Study O Portable presented 'Clogs' among other products at Royal ArtEZ exhibition, a part of Arnhem Mode Biënnale 2009. Clogs are wooden soles with waxed cotton cords that are woven or bound around the soles to hold the foot in place. One of them uses a weaving technique similar to finger trap to hold the heel in place, while the other version has an ankle strap that’s made from a single rope bound and tightened around the heel.

Poster for Border Kitchen 'Bella Italia' by Milena Agus & Davide Longo.

For this summer Sunday afternoon BorderKitchen (14-06-2009) we have invited two young and talented authors to discuss their work as writers and their newest novels.

Milena Agus was born in Genoa to Sardinian parents and now lives in Cagliari where she teaches Italian and History. Madame Agnese (translated into Dutch by Jeanne Crijns) is the third novel by the hand of this young author who was the literary surprise of 2007 in Italy and an instant international hit with her novel Mal di Pietra. Her stories are original, unartificial and almost naive but clearly show her capacity to cross the boundaries of reality. Milena Agus won the 2008 City of Rome Literary Prize.

Davide Longo was born in Carmagnola near Turin where he still lives today. For his first novel Un mattino a Irgalem (translated into Dutch by Pieter van der Drift) he received the Grinzane Cavour Prize and the Premio Via Po for the best debut in Italy. His second novel Il mangiatore di pietre was awarded the Premio nazionale di narrativa Bergamo and the Premio Viadana. Longo is also an author of children's books, short films and documentaries, his documentary Memorie dell'altoforno was screened at the Young Cinema festival in Turin.

Tea Petrovic has designed a collection of shoes based on the work of late Russian sculptor Naum Gabo and Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
This shoe collection is centered around the idea that each shoe is an sculptural-architectural structured form. The collection contains ten plastic prototypes entirely handmade. Each model is an experiment with the high heel, since they determine the whole form of a shoe. The heels are columns, constructive elements on which the whole creative process is based with an aim to create a new concept of high heels.
Bernard Figueroa once said: 'There is so much space between a woman's heel and the floor that one can use.', and that is exactly what I tried to accomplish using this space as much as possible.

These shoes are primarily an art object and their function is secondary. The focus is on the form, their only decorative element. Design is based on the exploration of new high heel shapes, resulting in numerous variations of their basic form. To underline their sculptural form, the shoes are kept white, which on the other hand emphasis the artistic language, present in the entire collection.

Design is based on the exploration of new high heel shapes, resulting in numerous variations of their basic form. To underline their sculptural form, the shoes are kept white, which on the other hand emphasis the artistic language, present in the entire collection.

Who said typography could not be sexy ?

When the elegance of typography meets the extravagance of fashion, it gives Alfashion. Alfashion is a stiletto typeface inspired by the surrealist game 'Exquisite Corpse' (Cadavre Exquis). The game is played as a group of players, each player adding a piece to a design, one at a time. Each participant ignores what the others are adding to the design.

The combination of unexpected or mismatching shapes creates a new design, an hybrid of fashion and typography.

'The book project Shoe Fleur: A Footwear Fantasy began with a picture of a leaf I had taken for a client,' says Michel. 'The leaf was turned upside down and I remember saying out loud to no one in particular, ‘that leaf looks like a shoe.’ And, after a move here and a twist there, I had created my first shoe fleur, appropriately named La Première.'

After La Première, Michel was hooked. Each morning for a year he went to the flower market at dawn to bring the freshest, most glorious blooms back to the studio. As the months passed, each shoe fleur emerged with a name and a story. “Every accessory became as unique as the flower or plant I used to make it,” says Tcherevkoff. With names such as Callous Lily, Fort Knox and Escargot each visual is a witty cultural quip.

With Diane von Furstenberg writing the Introduction to Shoe Fleur and Ferruccio Ferragamo writing the Preface, a launch evening at the Museum of Arts and Design, gallery exhibitions in New York and Paris, press coverage in magazines ranging from Elle to US Magazine, Michel has just been discovered as an important contemporary artist.

Arntz’s clear-cut style suited Neurath’s goals perfectly, and so he invited the young artists to come to Vienna in Gerd Arntz designed around 4000 signs, which symbolized key data from industry, demographics, politics and economy, for the visual language Isotype.

This informative and educational website is initiated by Ontwerpwerk design bureau and is realized in close cooperation with Peter Arntz, son of Gerd Arntz, and the Municipal Museum of The Hague, administrator of the Gerd Arntz archive. To produce a range of limited edition pieces based on the beautiful form and shape of the High Heel Shoe.

Using alien materials to explore the relationship between shape, form, material and how light interacts with these materials in the created piece. To see the form in materials of desire but not in the obvious way will stimulate interesting and often exciting reactions and emotions.

The SWIMS Story

Growing up with four distinct seasons in Norway, I never
let go of the black rubber galoshes that my late grandfather
passed on to me. In 1999 they accompanied me to a milder,
but still rainy Paris. Wearing Chuck Taylor’s Converse
and galoshes, I got around the severe rainfall that autumn.
Not surprisingly, my footwear became the subject of many
jokes around the art school I attended. Later, while living in New York, I blended in with an imageconscius culture that defied slushy streets, freezing winds and pouring rain. Naturally, this resulted in a lot of discomfort and many ruined pairs of shoes.

A few more Manhattan winters went by while I searched
for the right product before I finally took matters in my
own hands and decided to develop SWIMS - The Modern
Galosh! A stylish solution, embodying the essence of practicality: Wear your favorite shoes, slip on SWIMS when
the weather is rough, slip’em off when you arrive at your
destination. Enhanced comfort is assured and your shoes
are guaranteed to stay shiny. The SWIMS galosh is the product of my own experience, my appreciation of functional design, and my odd fascination with big city rain. Enjoy the weather!

‘For the Birds’ Shoes

When winter comes our world gets covered with snow, including the places where birds use to find their food. Birds prepare for wintertime and need enough energy to make it through the cold days with less food as usual. To help them survive some people hang out peanuts or seed balls, enjoying frequent visits of little sparrows.

These shoes are covered with delicious bird seeds. Wear these shoes when going for a break or reading a book and you will soon have little friends flying over for a small bite. Your healthy break becomes a bird’s healthy meal – double fun.

The ‘For the Birds’ shoes helps us getting through the winter by bringing man and nature a little bit closer.

The ‘For the Birds’ shoes are designed by Arnold van Bezooyen for an intercultural exhibition where traditional Korean shoes were conceptually redesigned by European designers to create a new look and meaning. Arnold’s passion for materials made him explore the materiality of the shoe instead of its form.

ZHAN Project (2005)

While I was living in Barcelona I heard that CAMPER was looking for young designers to join their design studio in Mallorca.

As I didn't have any shoes designed within my portfolio I decided to develop a project that would follow the company's Philosophy while giving it an added value.

Traveling and storage was the main focus on the project.

The result is a pair of shoes that incorporates an assembly system in its soles, solving the problem of carrying them while travelling; storing them when you don't have enough space in your room and even exhibiting them in stores.

The possibilities of assembly are almost endless.

The project presented here shows only one of the many possible systems.

Shoes can be assembled sideways by straight rails; with positive and negative 'check board' like soles assembled as puzzle, etc.

As the solution is only applied on the soles, any kind of shoe can be developed with this system (men's shoes, women's, kids, sport, etc.) giving us the opportunity to explore and enrich this project even more.

The I Ashi Bionicus range is insupired by Bjorks Music
video 'All is full of love' by Chris Cunningham and
the 06/07 trend of Apple I-pods, toyota I-series, I
robot etc.

The concept places emphasis on purity in simplicity
and form through clinical colour and minimal
construction. The exo-skeletal structure is comprised
of 10 pieces of vac formed gloss plastic thus reducing
on conventional toe puffs, counter stiffeners and
requires no lasting. The interior is comprised of
neoprene only exposing a single 1 cm stitch and thus
eliminates conventional fastening, lining and padding,
while the sole is a simple black resin.

As the foot is placed into the shoe, the elasticity of
the neoprene expands the shoe, hence ergonomic seams
in the plastic, and when the foot is fully inside the
shoe, the neoprene tightens retracts around the foot
to fit like a sock. The seams are carefully placed to
allow for movement in key ergonomic areas of the foot
maximizing comfort, flexibility and movement. The
design won the 2006 Linea Pelle Footwear Award in
Milan.

For this project I drew my inspiration from my three major passions: shoes, architecture and Milan.

I created the ‘City Walker’ concept: a 3D city map is literally wrapped around the foot on a simple sandal. In 2006, the 'City Walker Milan' was born. Inspired by the skylines of the greatest cities, the idea is to promote urban life and to connect people all over the world through the shoes they wear. Each city has its own model and each foot represents a different part of the city map. The idea is to add more cities and different models each season.

The Belle Epoque collection of shoes and boots is inspired of the flower embroidery and the forms of the 'beautiful era'.

Mellifluent moon on the lips of the maddened
The orchards and towns are greedy tonight
The stars appear like the image of bees
Of this luminous honey that offends the vines
For now all sweet in their fall from the sky
Each ray of moonlight’s a ray of honey
Now hid I conceive the sweetest adventure
I fear stings of fire from this Polar bee
that sets these deceptive rays in my hands
And takes its moon-honey to the rose of the winds

Fetish carrier bag is a product from ComuniStar designers, a young brand from Slovakia which creates unique contemporary designer furniture and interior accessories. Our mission is to create conditions for development and realisation of european design authorship, which will contribute to the building of cultural heritage of Central Europe. We use ideal regional technological and productional conditions for production of all designs. We are looking for own design language and identity, not seeking to follow the global mainstream. Questions like ecology, tradition, and social groups will not be suppressed by the dictation of what is currently trendy. ComuniStar has the ambition to become the commissary of a new original design identity from the former eastern block countries/from Central Europe.

Materials; laser cut stainless steel, leather In order to design and make comfortable shoes that have a different silhouette form than the form of a foot, I invented a leather-mâché technique. This technique made it possible to vary the thickness of the shoe at certain parts. In this shoe the leather-mâché technique is used with big sheets of leather, to make the form of the shoe very abstract. All the details like the toe and the heel come from the way of constructing this shoe. The heel for example is just another (reinforced) sheet of leather. I am interested in creating new shoe typologies for people with new fantasies and new definitions of beauty. In order to create these, to move forward in shoe design, I am introducing new shoemaking techniques and materials. Part of Soles exposed: 21 women in their favourite shoes (January 2005, Adam Street Gallery, London) This show featured paintings of 21 women in their favourite shoes, by artist and designer Kelly Sant. Kelly has painted the feet of some of the leading lights of the design and fashion worlds, each clad in their favourite shoes. From design curators, to stylists, to the muse of a 70s shoe designer, each has chosen the shoes that they feel best sum them up. Essentially these are portraits of feet, some defiant, some coy, some strident, some sexual: each painting richly conveys the essence and personality of their owner. Yet each portrait ends at calf level, tantalising the viewer with suggestions of what is not revealed. Trix was designed while studying architecture at the University of Leuven. Sandal made from carbon fibre covered with a thin layer of Rosewood and a white leather strap.

A simple and clear concept: core made from one piece by cutting and bending the heel out of the sole.

Also the strap is cut out of one single piece of leather folded between the toes and around the sole.

In 2000 I saw a documentary about the Royal College of Art on BBC2 that  focused on a course called Design Products. There was an artist on the course and the projects seemed to be very conceptual, ideas based, so I decided to apply.

When I walked into the interview room there were about six people standing around a table looking at my sketchbooks. A man said ’show me your shoes, show me your shoes!’ This confused me at first but later I learned that he was refering to a drawing in my sketchbook (shown above). This man turned out to be Ron Arad, a famous designer and architect. Luckily I was accepted on the course based on this and my other sketched ideas.

Virtual Shoe Museum : Minimal
Home of the Virtual Show Museum

Please read our Terms and conditions for using this website.

The Virtual Shoe Museum was initiated by Liza Snook in 2004. Once the idea was born, a long search began for designers, photographers and publishers connected to shoes. New friendships developed and our mailbox filled with loads of material on fantastic shoes, art and design on shoes.

And finally, with the help of Taco Zwaanswijk of Interactive Affairs, who designed the site, and Bart van der Ploeg of Resolume, who programmed the database and created the content management system, we're live! And proud! And we're only just beginning...

If you have any questions about the collection, or leads on shoes or designers, please let us know. Also, we're interested in your opinion on the collection and your experiences in the museum. You can contact the Virtual Shoe Museum by mail: Liza@VirtualShoeMuseum.com.

The Virtual Shoe Museum has different 'perspectives' on a shoe or object. These perspectives (designer, focus, colour, material, etc) show related objects and thus ways to navigate the collection.

The left column of the screen contains the main navigation. Each perspective contains several 'rooms'. Each room contains thumbnails of the objects it contains (on the right side of the screen). Choose any to view this object.

On an object's page, below the image, you can view more images, video and text (if available). Above the thumbnails, you find a list showing all the rooms this object belongs to. Here you can wander the rooms and find related objects.
