Basel Museum Night 2015

Basel’s next Museum Night will take place on Friday 16th January 2015. Because of the current exhibition ‘History under your feet – 3000 years of shoes’ at the Spielzeug Welten Museum their night programme will be a big celebration of shoes. From 18.00 til 2.00 there will be various shoe performances, tap dancing, shoe making, flip-flop workshops and shoe games. So put on your party shoes and come dance with us!


Special shoe exhibition at the Spielzeug Welten Museum in Basel from 18 October 2014 – 6 April 2015, in collaboration with the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery from England and the Virtual Shoe Museum. This special exhibition is devoted to an everyday object that for millennia has served to protect the soles of men, women and children: the shoe.

Coloro. The performance ‘Shoes’, a show developed exclusively for the Toy World Museum in Basle, will feature in the museum’s display window. Coloro – these are the Swiss artists Cornelia Clivio, Lorenz Matter and Romano Carrara. Numerous awards, seven years as a team and over 700 performances of their show ‘Stage TV’ on national and international stages attest to their success. 

Performance times: 18.00, 18.20, 18.40, etc. till 01.40

Tap dancing. Try tap dancing. And enjoy live performances by professional dancers. Experience how fascinating it is to generate rhythmic sounds through dance. Learn the first simple steps and routines under instruction from the tap dance professionals. The instructors will demonstrate how the perfect tap dance looks and sounds.

Shoeshine boys. Take a seat and have your shoes cleaned as in the days of old. During the 1920s and 1930s, young men offered their services as shoe cleaners in many cities. This tradition will experience a revival during the night of the museum. With a professional polish, two young men will bring a little lustre to the Museums Night.

Shoemaking with Thomas Murphy. Learn how a shoe is made. Experience how custom-made shoes are still handcrafted today and try your hand at shoemaking yourself. Thomas Murphy is one of the best-known shoemakers in the world. He designs for the collections under his own shoe label and is responsible for the children’s range ‘Chapter 2’. His creations are sold in boutiques around the world. Thomas Murphy teaches at the highly respected Royal College of Art in London and crafts creative shoes that have their grand appearance on the catwalks of the fashion metropolises.

Shoe race. The Formula 1 of remote-controlled shoes. Hit the gas pedal and win. You’re in the running with us, not with model cars, but with remote-controlled shoes. The winners will be presented with a small prize. Good luck at the shoe Grand Prix!

Mould a chocolate shoe. A highlight for those with a sweet tooth. You can mould shoes in chocolate all night long, and take them with you to indulge in later. Call by and sweeten your Museums Night.

For shoe masters. Play, score and win. A shoe table-top football game and various interactive shoe games guarantee plenty of excitement and lots of fun. Play the night away.

Flip-flop workshop. Together with the famous shoe designers Kobi Levi from Israel, Aki Choklat from Finland and Stuart Thom from Italy, you can create your own personalised flip-flops and take them home. Classical, eccentric, understated, colourful, glamorous, decorative or stylish. Whatever your heart desires. Everything you need is provided by the museum free of charge: glitter, sequins, beads and feathers – and of course, also pairs of flip-flops in two sizes and colours.

Don’t forget: If you’re feeling famished or just a little peckish, fine Italian specialities and other delicacies are waiting for you at Ristorante La Sosta. Treat yourself to a break from culture and plan a culinary intermezzo with us.
