Paper Art & Design!
A gallery, shop and workshop for art and objects made out of paper. It is situated in what was formerly Vroom Modemagazijn established on Weimarstraat in 1936 and is now the new centre for art and culture in The Hague.
Paper Art & Design offers a platform for expositions and sales to national and international artists working with paper or cardboard. The exposition room consists of large display windows directly facing the street and the front part of the large space. Lately we have seen many developments regarding paper art and design. An increasing number of artists and designers are using the unique characteristics of paper; and Paper Art & Design strives to propagate the properties and versatility of paper.
Loes Schepens, artist and owner of the gallery
My work can be seen as a memory or an emotion. I frequently use handmade paper that I make my self, a process that has to form and develop. I also work with re-used paper such as the tatters of a book, which relates directly to the content of the artwork.
Paper making is labour-intensive, even more so if you make it from durable materials such as cotton and flax. Paper has its limitations and also its own language. You cannot make any shape you wish but you can try manipulating it until you discover new techniques which get you what you are looking for. The challenge lies in the making of your own paper, so that you can explore the boundaries of the material. The really attractive aspect of paper is that it is fragile, vulnerable and translucent, it has its unique physicality. For me paper has an association with both the evanescence and the finite. I try to catch its vulnerability in form, with pulp: conceptualising, binding, folding, sewing. It evolves from the ephemeral to the timeless. Design strives to propagate the properties and versatility of paper.
Liza Snook, founder Virtual Shoe Museum
Liza Snook has been collecting everything related to shoes since the study at the Royal Academy of Art. To share her passion, more than ten years ago she founded the Virtual Shoe Museum with the help of her partner Taco Zwaanswijk. A website with designer shoes from almost all shoe designers. Museums around the world ask Liza to program exhibitions about shoes in art and design. In addition, she also works for Workman Publishers in New York as image researche , judges at design schools in the Netherlands and abroad and she helps young designers at the start of their careers.
Heleen Overbeek, designer Foot-Print
As a shoe designer, Heleen Overbeek examines how your shoes can be less environmentally damaging. She wants to calculate in the design how long a shoe should last. That is why Heleen designs shoes that can be used for a maximum of 30 days from degradable material such as paper. If they are worn, you can have them recycled by simply throwing the shoes in the paper bin. So Heleen makes your shoes from tomorrow out of your shoes yesterday. The paper disposable shoes from this exhibition come from the projects Foot-Print (2016) and EXP: RED (2018).
